Paua refers to three species of mollusk, which leave behind a remarkable iridescent shell. Paua shell is the New Zealand equivalent of abalone, and paua is prized by the Māori of New Zealand as both food and ornament. In Māori culture, paua shells are often used for eyes in carvings, and are associated with stars, which represent the eyes of ancestors.
