Sparkling Treble Clef Earrings

Sparkling Treble Clef Earrings

Designed by Mint Spring

Skill Level: Advanced/Intermediate

Technique: Sculpting half hard wire with snapsets

While playing around with a pair of snapset stones that I wanted to make into earrings, I came up with this open and elegant design that resembles a "treble clef."

Tip:Make both earrings at the same time, working one step on one earring and then the same step on the other.

Instructions

  1. For each earring clean, straighten, measure, and cut one piece of wire 4½ inches long and one piece 3 inches long. Individually twist each 3-inch wire. Place the center of a 4½ inch wire on round-nose pliers and wrap the wire around the jaw, making a complete loop. While the pliers are still in the loop, bend each of the wire's sides up, using the same radius as the loop. Repeat for the other earrings, making sure to wrap in the opposite direction.

  2. Use needle-nose pliers to make a very tiny loop at one end of each 3-inch twisted wire, and slide each over one end of one earring, and all the way down to the loop, working mirror opposites.

  3. Set each 6mm round CZ into each 6mm round snapset finding. Thread each snapset onto a U shaped wire, so the wire straddles the middle prongs, front and back.

  4. With the snapset stone being help tightly against the loop at the bottom of each U, bend the plain wire (the one without the attached twisted wire) out and away at a 90° angle, to hold the stone in place. Take the twisted wire and bring it across the front and under the snapset so that it is now sticking out the same side as the wire you just bent. On the lone straight wire, measure up from the snapset ⅞ inch and mark.

  5. Use your fingers to gently create an arc with the plain wire, bending until it crosses the ⅞-inch mark. Now bend the twisted wire in the same way, positioning it to end on the top of the first wire.

  6. Working with both of these wire ends as thought they were one, wrap them around the straight wire once, and do not trim. Return to the main, straight wire and make a small connection loop at the top, using the twisted wire end to wrap it in. Now trim the plain wire end to the same length as the twisted wire and use both to make small spirals to place on top of the wraps, one up and one down. Attach your favorite ear wires.
