Crazy Daisy Earrings
Skill Level: Beginner/All
Technique: Round Wire
In my local area, the Phoenix Theatre wanted entries for their gallery space, based on all of the plays for the past season. The play I choose was Driving Miss Daisy. Sometimes you just never know where the inspiration will come from - I think we were doing Sun Salutations in my yoga class, when I came up with the idea for these earrings. Although this pattern uses the wire as it is, the daisies also look cool when they have been textured!
Materials
- 21-gauge round soft wire, 18 inches
- 8 5mm rondelle beads
- Medium-link chain, 2 1/4" (1" for each earring, and 1/4" to compensate for cut links)
- 8 24-gauge 2" head pins
- 1 pair ear wires
Tools
Instructions
- Straighten, measure, and then cut the 21-gauge wire into two 9" pieces, one for each earring. Mark the center of each wire at 4 1/2". Making one daisy at a time, using one wire, place the mark into the double barrel bail pliers and bend the wire over the larger barrel to form a 3/8" petal.
- Move the bail pliers 3/8" from the cross-over of the first petal and make a second petal. Now move the pliers 3/8" from the cross-over of petal #2 and make a third petal. Continue making petals opposite one another, until there are five petals.
- Making sure that the wire end you just worked with is at the front and center of the daisy, slide one 5mm yellow rondelle bead onto it. Immediately after the bead, bend the wire 90° over the top of the bead and then use chain nose pliers to shape it into a tiny loop. Trim the wire as needed, locking on the bead.
- Working with the second, longer wire end, bring it up behind the top petal. Working from the back to the front, wrap the wire around the top/center of the top petal once. Use the remaining length to begin a small wrapped loop, add the end link of a 1" piece of chain, and then finish wrapping the loop in. Trim and tuck the end.
- Depending on the style of chain you are using, decide where you would like to add some extra color. Then make two headpin charms for each earring, each charm using one headpin and one bead. Remember to slide their loops onto a chain link before wrapping them in. Trim and tuck each wire end. Add your favorite ear wires, or make your own and add one bead to each as I did.
