Wire Artist of the Month December 2010: Diana White

December Artist of the Month Diana White

About Diana

I am a forty-something, Department of the Army Civilian Educator by day, wire jewelry artisan during weekends and vacations, and Jane-of-all-trades the rest of the time that I'm not sleeping.

I fell into wire sculpting about six years ago because a friend made a nifty looking chain out of stainless steel wire. The friend had used the technique called Trichinopoly (a.k.a. Viking Knit) and I simply had to try it myself. Since that first dismal-yet-magical attempt, I have been working with wire every chance I get.

It is only very recently, though, that I have found my niche market. I have Dale Cougar Armstrong and other wire jewelry teachers to thank for sharing their wire bundling techniques, which I've adapted to create jewelry collars for a specialty market.

Tell Us About Saving the London Blue

The piece I'm showing to you here has a little story. The London Blue Topaz in the pendant is my first venture in to a more expensive sort of stone. Originally, it was to be a simple drop pendant with a spiral wrapped tip. But the drilled hole near the tippy top weakened the stone and it snapped off while I was making the original design.

I was heartbroken, and thought I had utterly wasted the beautiful stone. But, after letting go of my angst and giving my brain time to percolate ideas while I worked on other things, I came up with a way to salvage the situation and the stone.

This sort of thing is what I love most about working with wire, you can create beauty in so very many different ways. Even to the point of reclaiming old or broken pieces and giving them renewed life and luster.

Dale's Comments

Love the concept and the execution! Great way to build a frame; nice coiling; great finish to larger round wire. Awesome concept for a bail that totally fits the design; overall unique and different.
