Opening and Closing Square Wire Rings in Chain Maille.

by Kylie Jones
Square wire jump rings have crisp edges and need to be closed carefully to look great. It is really important when you first open a ring that you don't twist the wire, even slightly, because when you bring the edges back together if they have twisted they won't line up.
Instructions
Using the pliers to hold the rings in a single place near the edge is ok for fine adjustments but it will allow the rings to twist when you are making large moves in opening and closing the rings. To stop the wire from twisting you can use your pliers to grasp the whole side of the ring when you open and close the rings.

Other good options are the flat sides of bent nosed pliers and particularly for copper rings, plastic jaw pliers can protect the soft copper edges.

If you do twist the ring and the edges won't meet as a square you can use a fine needle file to square up the join.
