Coin Focal Inspiration

by Judy Larson
The last time you looked through your jewelry box, or boxes like me, there were probably many pieces shoved to the side and no longer worn for one reason or another. Why not think about restyling them to have a more current look.

This inspiration was used to create the jewelry-making pattern: Coin Focal
Instructions
Some of my beaded jewelry needed a refresh because I realized I wasn't wearing it.

One example was a bracelet I had made to match a three-strand necklace that I love.

Wearing both together felt too matchy-matchy.

On top of that, the bracelet's slide clasp was too loose.
The strands were separated and restrung using 49-strand beading wire instead of 19-strand for better flexibility and strength.

They sat on the bead board for several days while I struggled to come up with a design idea for a focal closure.

I realized I also rarely wore my coral necklace and bracelet set for the same reason I didn't wear the multi-colored gemstone bracelet.

Maybe adding more coral would be the solution.

Off to my box of red coral I went.

A friend gave me the coral coin focal less than six months ago.

How could I have put it away with my coral beads and completely forgotten such a unique piece?

I'm going to blame it on old age not the fact that I have way too many beads and can't remember a tenth of what's in there!

The obvious solution for attaching the coral coin to the bracelet was to use a beaded loop through the center hole.

But bezel setting the coin took it up a notch.

It enhanced the focal point and tied in beautifully with the silver elements on both ends of the bracelet.
I only remembered the Japanese 50-yen coins in my stash after finishing the bracelet.

I quickly turned one into a focal and made a similar bracelet with it BONUS!

Both bracelets look fantastic with the multi-gemstone and coral necklaces, as well as many pieces of my Southwest jewelry.
