Choosing the Right Saw Blade Part 2

by Susan LeGuyader
In Part 1 of Choosing the Right Saw Blade, I talked about the size of the blades for the metal you're using. Here I'll review some basic tips for successful sawing and storage ideas.
Instructions
Things happen during manufacturing, which can make you lose your ever-loving mind, when sawing. One of these possibilities is that you JUST CANNOT saw a straight line or you are drifting to one side or the other. It might not be you!

Change your saw blade. If it keeps happening, open a new bundle and try again. If that doesn't work, use a different saw frame. If that still doesn't work, try a better quality of saw blades.

Saw blades do wear out. When teeth are dulled to the point where extra force must be used in cutting, it is best to replace the blade. Extra pressure decreases control; therefore, nothing is gained by this economy.

Often saw blades break before they wear out, a wasteful situation. This can be avoided or at least minimized with proper sawing procedures. The two main reasons for blades breaking are too much force used while sawing, and pinching the blade from twisting either the metal or the saw frame.
To install a saw blade in a jeweler's hand-saw frame:

• Loosen the nuts or screws on the saw frame.
• Slip one end of the blade into the fixture.
• Make sure the blade's teeth are pointing outwards and down towards the handle.
• Tighten the nut or screw.
• Apply pressure from the end of the saw so that the blade is guided into the other fixture.
• Repeat the process for the other end of the blade.

If you are using a Knew Concepts saw frame, the installation is different.
