This tutorial will show you step by step how to make a beautiful woven wire cross pendant. The dimensions can also be adapted to make a sword. Tip: draw a basic sketch outline to help reference your dimensions.

Instructions

Step 1

Straighten out 7 inches of 1mm/ 18 gauge round wire.

Step 2

Find the middle of the wire by bringing the ends in together.

Use your pliers to gently press the bend close together so that the ends of the wires sit next to each other running parallel.

Step 4

Create a sharp outward bend at a 90 degree angle on each side, approximately one inch up from the bottom bend in the wire.

Step 5

You can use your sketch to guide you or measure with a ruler and mark the point of the bend with a pen.

Step 6

Using approximately 60cm of 0.4mm/26 gauge wire begin your weave by positioning the 0.4mm/26 gauge wire into the bend and wrapping three times around one side of the bend to secure.

Open the 1mm/ 18 gauge wire out a little if needed to secure the weaving wire.

Step 8

Trim off the start tail end of weaving wire and tuck in to ensure that there are no sharp edges.

Step 9

Wrap twice over both parts of the base wire.

Step 10

Bring the weaving wire in between to wrap twice over one (top base wire if holding the base of the cross horizontally).

Wrap twice over both.

Wrap twice on the other side (bottom wire if positioned horizontally).

Keep compressing your weave down together with your pliers to keep it neat.

Repeat this weave approximately 7 times or until you reach the outward bends in the wire.

Keep the remaining weaving wire attached.

Step 16

Measure around 1cm on each side from the center of the cross (you can mark this with a pen and use your diagram sketch to guide you if needed).

Step 17

Make sure both sides look equal.

To start forming the arms of the cross, bend the wires upwards on each side.

Continue to bend the upwards wires across fully into the center of the cross.

Use pliers to compress these bends to ensure the wire is running closely next to each other to form one arm.

Step 21

Find the center point of the cross.

Step 22

Bend the wire back up vertically from this center point.

Do the same on the opposite side, to create the other arm of the cross, by bending the wire sharply over and upwards again from the center point.

Step 24

The base wires should be positioned so that they are sitting vertically, parallel to each other and in line with the bottom weaved wires.

Thread your bead onto the weaving wire.

Position the bead in the center of the cross.

Secure the bead in place by wrapping the weaving three times to one of the base wires.

Repeat the same weaving pattern (that was done on the base of the cross) up the top of the cross for approximately half an inch.

Two wraps over both, two wraps on one side, two wraps over both, two wraps on the other side.

Step 30

Leave on the remaining weaving wire.

Cut a length of approximately 5 inches of 0.8mm/ 20 gauge wire .

Using around 30cm of 0.4mm/26 gauge wire create a coil 1 inch in length, in the centre of the 0.8mm/20 gauge wire by wrapping around the 20 gauge base wire continuously .

Trim off the weaving wire on both ends of the coil and tuck in .

Start to bend the coil tightly around the bead from the bottom side of the cross.

Step 35

Bring the ends of the 0.8mm/ 20 gauge wire around the back of the arms on the cross and wrap them around to secure.

Using the ends of the 0.8mm/ 20 gauge wire, now fixed in place, create curves and swirls along the front of the arms of the cross on each side.

Pro Tip: Work on each arm at the same time to create symmetry and decorate to your preference making sure the ends of the curls or swirls are tucked in.

Once you are happy with your decoration, its time to make the bail.

Using round nose pliers or bail step pliers hold them at the top of the weave at the top of the cross and bend the base wires slightly forward.

Create a loop with both base wires over the top of your pliers so that the wires run back down along the back of the cross.

Carefully hold the bail in place with the pliers so that it does not twist out of shape.

The ends of the 1mm/ 18 gauge wire can be splayed out either side and brought to the front side of the cross .

They can now be trimmed and flattened down against the cross to fix in place or using round nose pliers, these can be used to create more decorative curls and swirls.
