This tutorial teaches you how to make a Lariat style necklace. It is split into three sections. The first covers making the coiled beads, (which could be used as part of any design) they are incredibly quick to make with an eye catching result. The second guides you through making the wire ring and the final section details how to construct this sleek and stylish necklace.

I have used seed beads as part of this design, but this is only a suggestion, you can use any beads you like, as long as the three strands fit through the ring.
The materials list is for the complete 26" necklace (including 1 ring 1" wide and 1 3/4" loop to loop and 6 coiled wire beads measuring 2/3").

Instructions
Step 1:
Making the beads
Cut a piece of 18 gauge wire 6" long. This will be used later to make the ring, but for now we will use it as a mandrel to coil the wire.
Cut a piece of 24 gauge wire 12 " long and attach it to the mandrel wire by coiling 3 times, leaving a 1 ½" tail.

Step 2
Push the coils tightly together, by sliding your thumb nail along the thick wire as shown.
It is very important that your coiling is even and neat, since this is what creates the detail of your beads.

Step 3
Coil until you have covered 1" of the 18 gauge wire, keep the tension on the 24 gauge wire even and the wire at a 90° angle to the thicker wire to ensure your coils are neat and evenly sized. You should have 1 ½" tail on both ends now.
Pro Tip: Hold the tail against the thicker wire to stop the 24 gauge wire turning on itself as you coil.

Step 4
Slide the coiled wire carefully from the 18 gauge wire. Attach it to the 16 gauge scrap wire by holding the coils so that they sit alongside the thick wire with the 1 ½" tail at a 90° angle to it. Coil the thin wire tail 3 times around the thick wire to secure in place. Notice how this pulls the coiling round the thick wire slightly.

Step 5
Hold the 1 ½" tail against the thick wire with the flat nose pliers to stop the wire turning on itself.
Position the coiled wire so that it is at a 90° angle to the thick wire.

Step 6
Wrap the coiled wire around the thick wire 4 times by holding the unsecured 1 ½" tail, keeping the tension on the wire even, don't pull the wire too tightly as you will distort the coils.
Once you reach the end of the coiled wire, wrap the thick wire with the 1 ½" tail 3 times to secure. If you let go of the wire before you secure it, it will unravel itself and you will need to carefully wrap it around the thick wire again.
Notice that once you let go of the coiled wire it releases slightly so that you have 3 full wraps of the coiled wire.

Step 7
Trim the tails on each end and tuck them in neatly with the chain nose pliers. Notice that although the coiled wire is secured in place it is not yet solid and still able to move about.

Step 8
Cut a piece of 20 gauge wire 4" long. Hold it at a 90° angle to the bead, with a 1" tail, so that the length of the wire points in the same direction as the coils on the bead. Coil the 20 gauge wire, so that it sits between the coiled 24 gauge wire, securing it firmly in place. Notice how this makes the bead slightly longer.
Coil both ends 3 times with the 20 gauge wire, ensuring that this coiling sits on top of the 24 gauge coils at each end of the bead.

Step 9
Trim both tails of the 20 gauge wire. By angling the jaws of the wire cutters as shown you create a sloped end that tucks neatly against the other coils so that it does not get caught. Tuck the ends in with the chain nose pliers.
Carefully squeeze the bead together by placing the jaws of the chain nose pliers at either end of the bead and compressing the bead. By very careful as if the pliers slip they may mark the wire. Do this either side of the mandrel wire. The bead should now measure 2/3" long.
Slide the bead off the thick wire. That's one bead complete - now you need to make another 5.

Step 10:
Making the ring
Cut a piece of 24 gauge wire 40" long. Attach it to the 6" 18 gauge wire (that you used as a mandrel for the beads) by coiling 3 times, leaving a 1" tail.
Continue coiling. Push the coils tightly together by sliding your thumb nail along the thick wire as shown. Continue coiling until you have covered approx. 4 ½" of the thick wire.

Step 11
Carefully slide the coiled wire off the thick wire. Attach the coiled wire to the thick wire by holding it alongside and coiling the 1 ½" tail 3 times. Hold the thick wire and the 1" tail in your left hand, position the coiled wire at 90 degrees to the thick wire.
Coil the coiled wire around the 18 gauge wire, you should cover approx. 2". Once you reach the end of your coiled wire, coil the thick wire 3 times with the 1" tail to secure.

Step 12
Trim the 1" tails and tuck the ends in with the chain nose pliers. Even up the spiralled wire in necessary by gently turning it until you are happy.
Notice how one of the wraps has a coil that is too stretched - don't worry if this happens, we will fix it once the ring is made and everything is secured in place.

Step 13
Cut a piece of 20 gauge wire 12" long. Attach it to one end by coiling once, ensuring that it is pointing in the same direction as the coiled wire.
Leave a 4" tail, which we will use to secure the loop later.
Wrap the 20 gauge wire between the coiled wire until you reach the other end.
Wrap the 20 gauge wire over the coils of the 24 gauge wire 3 times to secure it in place. Trim the short end but leave the 4" length attached.
You should have 3 ¼" of coiled wire work. Position it so that there is 1" of thick core wire at one end and 2 ½" at the other.

Step 14
Wrap the wire work around the ring mandrel on size N (USA size 7 or inner circumference 54mm).
If your wirework is not long enough for this size, wrap the wire around a smaller size so that the coiled ends meet.

Step 15
Bend the wire. Make a 90° bend in the 2 thick wires at the point where they cross, so that they both point straight upwards. Trim the short wire to ¼".
Grasp the thick wire ¼" from the coiling and make a 90° bend outwards with the flat nose pliers.

Step 16
On the straight length of wire just past the bend, grasp with the round nose pliers and make a large loop. Bend the wire downwards 90° at the point where the loop closes and trim to ¼".

Step 17
Hold the 3 ¼" pieces of wire together as shown and bind together with the 4" tail of 20 gauge wire 6 times. Trim the tail and tuck in to the centre of the binding with the chain nose pliers. The ring should measure 1" across and 1 ¾" from loop to loop.

Step 18
If you have pulled the coils too tightly when making the ring and ended up with gaps, don't worry this is easy to fix. Once you have finished making the ring grab your tweezers (if using your eyebrow tweezers - give them a wash first LOL) and pinch the coils back together.
Abby Hook's Lavender Lariat Necklace - , Findings & Components, Toggles & Clasps, Earwire & Headpin, Coiling, Coiling Wire, Wire Coiling, Beads, pinch the coils
Step 19:
Assembling the necklace
One final bit of preparation work to do. Cut a piece of 24 gauge wire 10" long. Coil this onto the 16 gauge scrap wire in the same way as before.
Don't forget to straighten your scrap wire before you start by running it through your nylon jaw pliers.
This should give you 1" of coiling. Trim the ends and tuck them in, slide the coiling off the mandrel wire.
Measure and cut 3 lengths of beading wire, each measuring 32". Thread them through the 1" of coiled 24 gauge wire.

Step 20
Thread the three beading wires onto the loop of the ring. Thread a crimp bead onto one of the wires, thread the other end of that wire through the crimp, so that you have a ½" tail and pull tightly so that the coiled wire forms a loop.
Pinch the crimp closed with the chain nose pliers. You can use crimping pliers if you prefer, but I find that the 3 wires sit better if the crimps are flattened.
Repeat on the other 2 beading wires, so that all three are securely attached to the ring.

Step 21
On one of the wires thread the following beads:
7 seed beads
7 6mm stone beads
7 seed beads
1 coiled silver bead
Ensure that the ½" tail is also threaded into the beads.
Add seed beads to the 2 other wires, so that they are the same length as the first one (each section should measure approx. 3" including the silver bead). Thread the 2 wires through the silver bead.

Abby Hook's Lavender Lariat Necklace - , Findings & Components, Toggles & Clasps, Earwire & Headpin, Coiling, Coiling Wire, Wire Coiling, Beads, add beads
Step 22
Repeat those steps until you have threaded all the silver beads.
Pro Tip: To give the impression that the beading wires twist around themselves, thread the 6mm beads onto a different wire after each silver bead.
Abby Hook's Lavender Lariat Necklace - , Findings & Components, Toggles & Clasps, Earwire & Headpin, Coiling, Coiling Wire, Wire Coiling, Beads, continue to add beads
Step 23
To create the tassels, on one of the beading wires thread 3 ½" of seed beads, then the following beads:
1 x 2.5mm silver bead
3 x 6mm stone beads
1 x crimp
1 x 2.5mm silver bead
Make sure that the beading wires are tight and that there are no gaps further down the necklace. Then thread the wire back through the crimp and the 3 6mm beads, creating a small loop at the bottom with the 2.5mm silver bead.
Pull tightly and secure the crimp in place. Trim the wire and hide the end in the silver bead.
