A photo of a young girl with her ice skates inspired me to make a metal stamped piece with the words "she is brave." I added a feminine touch by using dimple pliers to give the edge a serrated look. The palette spoke "mixed metals" to me, so I added a silver star charm and created wire spirals from 24-gauge silver wire, then threaded them onto deerskin leather lace in a garnet color to match the girl's dress in the photo. A few beaded dangles inserted into the knotted leather adds a final touch to my "Brave Little Skater" necklace.

Step 1
Place the metal blank on the bench block and stamp the words "she is brave" by holding each stamp perpendicular to the blank and using the hammer to strike firmly one time.

Step 2
Use a fine tip Sharpie marker to color in the letters.

Step 3
Remove the excess marker around the letters and polish the blank using a pro polishing pad.

Step 4
Use the dimpling pliers to add small ridges to the outside edge of the copper blank.

Step 5
Use 24" of 24-gauge wire and a small tube as a mandrel to form a coil (I used a kitchen thermometer). Center the wire against the center of the mandrel.

Step 6
Use one hand to wrap the wire tightly around the mandrel to one side of the center. Turn the mandrel over and continue to wrap the wire around the mandrel on the other side.

Step 7
Form two more identical coils in the same manner.

Use a jump ring to add a small star charm to the copper pendant, then string one of the coils through the jump ring to check the sizing (you may need to use a larger jump ring if the coil will not slide through the jump ring).

Step 9
Form several beaded dangles by stringing a faceted bead onto a head pin, then form a large wrapped loop.

Step 10
String the coil/pendant unit onto a piece of leather lace that is about 32-36" long.

Step 11
Form an overhand knot about 1-2" from the pendant, adding a beaded dangle to the leather before completing the knot. Form a second knot about an inch above the previous knot. Slide a coil onto the leather, then form another overhand knot.

Step 12
Add a few more dangles to the leather as desired. Repeat Steps 11 and 12 on the other half of the necklace.
