Color Inspiration - Tibetan Thangka

by Nancy Chase
Working in an antique shop for many years, I saw lovely things. I had not seen anything like this Thangka painting. It is an ancient form of Buddhist art originating in Tibet in the 11th century. Painted on cotton, they are used as a teaching and meditation tool.
Tibetan Thangkas have traditionally been painted by Buddhist priests who have been trained in the monasteries of northern India and Nepal.

Canvas has to be prepared by stretching it smoothly on a bamboo frame. Then the outline of the deity is made on the canvas, in pencil or charcoal, and overlaid with a fine brush, and the addition of gorgeous colors. Though acrylic paints have now replaced the traditional natural pigments, bright blues, turquoise, red coral, and mountainous greens show a distinctive colorway.

Before being released to the world, the Thangka paintings are often bestowed with blessings and positive energy. It is said that even looking upon such a painting will place a positive feeling within one's mind, leading to future happiness.

A long necklace, without a clasp, this inspiration is made with a carnelian gemstone bead, felted wool beads make to resemble coral, turquoise, and amber. The wire double spirals act as connectors. The copper wire faux bead caps on the wood, and green glass bead add a nice finishing touch.
