I have had many fortunate opportunities to visit the beautiful Hawaiian islands numerous times. A vacation was always fun but my fave visits were vending at a bead show. Believe it or not, every 6 months there was a great bead show in Oahu and I loved meeting the locals and hanging out with my beady peeps. I always added on an island visit at the end of the show with a puddle-jumper plane ride and eventually stayed on every island.
One of the hotels provided this beautiful image of the Big Island. I loved the color pallet and thought someday I'd use it as inspiration for a jewelry creation.

I found a great skein of yarn with similar colors and made this fun fiber focal bead ages ago. I had no idea how to wear the focal and it got tired of collecting dust, so I finished it off with a funky boho vibe and made it very long using chain and crystal links. The term "Mahalo" means thank you in Hawaiian and I felt it apropos for the title of this necklace; thanking the beauty of Hawaii and all the natural inspiration I've received!
Hanging the focal from a simple chain wasn't interesting enough so I cut the chain into pieces and added some crystal connectors. That really helped pull the whole piece together and enhanced a basic chain. The chain length can be adjusted shorter if desired. I also used 2 fancy shaped crystals but any gemstone, pearl or glass bead would work well too.
