Color Inspiration - Inlaid Barrette

Sometimes color inspiration is literally right in front of me. I shook my hair out of this hair clip and set it on my workspace. As I started to design and work on my latest bracelet project, I noticed the clip, and began to pick out beads to go along with it.

Looking for colors to coordinate with the many tiny copper spirals I created. This vintage Mexican alpaca silver hair clip is made with a mother of pearl flower. Abalone accents are set within a blue, and black resin background.

Alpaca silver was developed in 1823. A German competition was held with the goal of inventing an alloy that looked most like silver. Called nickel silver, it is an alloy made from copper, nickel, and zinc. It does not tarnish.

In Mexico, alpaca silver is frequently used to make jewelry and crafts. It is durable and malleable. This allows it to be designed into detailed pieces while being strong enough to hold its shape.

My bead stack bracelet is made with brass colored memory wire. The tiny spirals are made with 20-gauge soft round craft wire.

The lapis blue, black onyx, mother of pearl, and grey jasper 4mm beads are interspersed with the spirals creating a free spirited form on the wrist to catch the eye.
