About Jewelry Chain - Cable Chain and Rolo Chain

by Judy Ellis
This week in our series on chain, we're discussing cable and rolo chain. Cable chain, also called trace chain, and rolo chain, also called belcher chain, are all similar chain links that are found all over the jewelry world!

What is Cable Chain?

Cable chain, also known as trace chain, features symmetrical links that are uniform in both width and thickness. The classic cable chain design often consists of oval or round links, typically crafted from round or flattened wire.

The beauty of cable chain lies in its simplicity and strength. Its consistent shape makes it ideal for a variety of uses-whether it's suspending a pendant, accenting a bracelet, or even creating delicate tassels for earrings.

Thanks to its uniform structure, cable chain pairs well with all types of jewelry components. It's a go-to choice for minimalist designs that focus on clean lines and subtle sophistication.

What is Rolo Chain?

Rolo chain, also referred to as belcher chain, is defined by its round, symmetrical links that differ from cable chain by their unique construction.

Rolo chain links are typically made from half-round wire, meaning that the outer surface of each link is rounded, while the inside is flat or slightly hollowed.

This gives the links a distinctive look: they appear wider from the outside, but thinner when viewed from the side.

Rolo chain is often used as a statement piece on its own, especially for bracelets and anklets. Its bold, rounded design can also be a strong foundation in wire-wrapped jewelry, adding dimension and visual interest to any piece.

Unlike cable chain, where the links are uniform in thickness, rolo chain provides a dynamic contrast that enhances both simple and intricate designs.
