This week’s tool: Jewelry Shield Protectant, Item # JWL-180.00
Demonstration by Kate, JewelryTools.com
This week’s featured tool from JewelryTools.com is the JWL-180.00 Jewelry Shield Protectant, which is a coating you can apply to your handmade wire jewelry to protect your customers with sensitive or allergic skin from metal.
While we’ve talked about finishes in the past for those with metal allergies and sensitive skin, such as Krylon Clear Coat, clear nail polish, and other polymers and waxes, this product is guaranteed to last 3 months per application. This coating could be a premium service you offer in custom orders! Even offer bottles for sale at shows just as you would offer premium chains and polishing cloths, and customers can reapply the coating themselves. This will even keep skin from turning black or green from silver or copper!

Does this protectant harm pearls, beads or gems? Is there a problem with build up if put on too much?

Alternatively, you could use Argentium (there is no copper but rather germanium for the alloy) or a non-allergenic metal such as niobium.

This is a terrific product, but do not put it on your pearls, beads or gems, just on the metal. It applies and dries like nail polish. It does wear off if subjected to friction. I use it on my eyeglasses where the enamel has worn off the ears.

I thought that Argentium only replaced part of the copper with Geranium, I thought it was about 1%.
The allergy that shows up most in jewelry is from nickle, not copper. Copper has the ‘green’ problem, and since it is more reactive, it is a poor choice for ear wires.
Ear wires seem to be where allergies are the worst. I can wear SS chains, but not ear wires. I can’t wear fine silver wires either, since my allergy is to the silver! What is odd, is that I do not have problems with cheap ear wires.

What is Jewelry Shield made of?

I’ve been using ProtectaSeal from Everbrite Coatings for my copper jewelry, and it’s wonderful as well. And it lasts much longer than 3 months after it’s applied.

Sorry – – the Name is ProtectaClear, not ProtectaSeal.

Can Jewelry Shield be used on Artistic wire or other color coated wire to help keep the finnish intact?
