JOGS 2017 – Beads, Fire and Metal

Today we continue with our introduction of our 2017 JOGS Instructors – Janet Alexander and Janna Lehmer

Janet Alexander:

Janet is an accomplished metal artist, jeweler, and author. She is a Finalist Winner in the prestigious 2015 Saul Bell Completion. Her work is shown in museums across Texas and published in several books and magazines, Contemporary Metal Clay Rings, Metal Clay in Color, American Craft Magazine, Metal Clay Artist Magazine, Contemporary Metal Clay Rings, Metal Clay 101 for Beaders, and in New Directions: Powder Metallurgy in a Sheet Metal World. She also is an author of many online tutorials, magazines, and books.

Her work is shown on the cover of the October Metal Clay Artist Magazine. She has over 40 years experience in jewelry metal arts as a bench jeweler, designer, and instructor. Janet is a National Jewelry Instructor teaching at conventions, and bead shows including Bead & Button, Interweave Bead Fest, Adorn Me, and Metal Clay by the Bay. While appearing on HGTV Crafters Coast to Coast and That’s Clever demonstrating she demonstrated the process of lost wax casting and wax carving techniques.

Janet has a BFA in Metals from the University of North Texas and has studied metal working with several Master Jewelers. She has GIA certification in diamond grading and stone setting. Additionally, she has certification in Precious Metal Clay with Rio Grande, Crossover Certification with Art Clay, and is a PMC Connection Senior Instructor and Technical Advisor for the PMC Connection.

A few of Janet’s Classes:

Learn how to perform multiple soldering, sweat soldering, and make a shadow box with textured copper. The texture is created by using the microfold brake tool. Additionally, you’ll learn how turn useless scrap metal into accent silver balls that are exactly the same size. Janet shares her tips and tricks of her knowledge she’s gained over the last 40+ years of jewelry making. Skill Level: Intermediate

Create your own variation of these waterfall earrings made of copper and colored using different patina solutions including alcohol ink, dye-oxide, traditional patina, and universal patina. Create your own unique earring configuration for how they hang.

Learn the fundamentals of soldering Argentium Silver and Sterling Silver metals with expert Janet Alexander who has over 40 years of experience in soldering. In this class you will make a wide flared band ring with your choice of spinner.

In this class you will learn the pros and cons of working in Argentium metal, annealing processes, solder types, sizing a ring, creating a spinner for the ring, flaring techniques, using a torch, and fast finishing techniques to save time. Skill Level: Intermediate

Janna Lehmer:

Janna got her start in jewelry making in 2011 through a part time job at a local bead store, Bead Boutique. There she fell in love with various jewelry media and has been designing and teaching at that same local bead shop ever since day one!

Janna is an active member of the Bead Society of Greater Kansas City and has taught workshops and free classes for members and her community. She as been Classes Chair person for Bead Blast, a yearly retail bead show sponsored by the Kansas City Bead Society, for the past 3 years. Janna’s design philosophy is “take deep breaths and have fun!”. She is known for her patience, helpful hints and tricks and her love of teaching. Janna is a partner in 2sistersjewelrykc on Facebook.

By switching one element, and incorporating gemstones, crystals and/or pearls, you will create a one-of-a-kind focal component taking Kumihimo to a whole new level! Skill level: All Pre-requisite: Students should have previous braiding and wire experience.

Crystal Train Tracks

Using a very simple double needle method (it’s easy!), create a simple, delicate necklace that is light and fun to wear. Skill level: All Pre-requisite: Some students may not finish in the time alloted, depending on beading experience.

Chain Kumihimo

2/04/2017 2:30pm - 6:00pm Janna Lehmer Chain Kumihimo

Incorporating chain into the braiding gives Kumihimo a very interesting/intricate look! This element makes for a nice piece to hang custom made pendants on or by itself. Skill level: Intermediate Pre-requisite: Students should have a working knowledge of Kumihimo.
