Creating Symmetry in Design
by Sarah Thompson
We love when our contributors give us great tips for our readers – today is one of those. Have you ever had trouble getting your designs to look the same on each side? Sarah gives us a tip on how to accomplish symmetry!
Sarah Says:
Symmetry is a big part of my designs. But just eyeballing your symmetry can lead to minute errors that all add up and in the end can dramatically throw off your finished design. To help you achieve better symmetry here is one trick that I use.
Steps for Symmetry:
Take a square ruler and line up the bottom to the edge of your table. Cut a 6 inch strip of masking or scotch tape and line it up to the vertical edge of your ruler.
Lay it down and press it firmly to your table. Move the ruler up a couple of inches, keeping it in line with the tape. Cut another 6 inch length of tape( I like using two different colors) and line it up to the horizontal edge of the ruler, let a couple of inches cross over the previous tape to form a “+”.
Lay down the tape and firmly press to the table. I like using my nail to run along the edges where the two tapes over lap so I can see the indentation of the tape below.
You now have a two axis that you can use to quickly line up your work as you go to verify that you are truly center and keeping the wire-work symmetrical.

This tip came just in time. I am working on a necklace design for a bride and I have been struggling trying to get the symmetry I want. This tip is so simple I kind of feel like…why didn’t I think of that. Thank you so much.
