Question:

Have you ever finished a piece and decided you didn’t like how it turned out, then taken it apart to rework it?  I finally finished a long copper pendant necklace with large hand-formed rings connected with wire wrapped leather straps.  It just doesn’t look as I’d hoped.  If I want to sell it, I need to redo it.  Is there a better manner for connecting the rings?

Answer:

To answer your first question, Yes! Many times I have worked on something new and different that I really didn’t think ‘I’ liked, but often this (whatever the piece is) sells almost immediately! I know what you are asking though and without actually seeing the piece I cannot give more than a generalized suggestion, which would be to use smaller hammered rings. The wire wrapped leather sounds very cool though and you might just put it out there and see what type of response you get, as you may be pleasantly surprised!

    It’s so true about sometimes the ones the artists does not like sell faster than the ones that are favorites. My grandmother saw the same thing when she was repainting fashion dolls. All the ones she loved the best would never or barely sell, and the ones she was just ‘room temperature’ about were sold for much more and got better responses.

    Wow! I’ve heard the same thing about what you don’t like may be the first to sell. Different tastes for different folks — though sometimes, it seems hard to stretch beyond what one likes. I would love to see the piece.

    The pieces I like the least almost always sell first. When I do not like the way something comes out it is almost a guarantee sale;-)

    I totally agree. I make dichroic glass pendants and it amazes me that some of the ones I think are awful get snatched up first. We just never know what will touch someone else’s soul.

    My daughter and I just recently started selling our pieces and the first three things to sell where actually items that we were going to leave at home as niether of us cared for them at all. We have discussed this at length and have decided that there really is something out there for every one. So I would advise you not to “write that piece off” just yet, but, instead, put it out there and see what comments you do get. You may be pleasantly surpirsed.
