Daily Wire Tip June 23: Button Wire Jewelry Ideas
Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip for
June 23, 2011
Question:
I have several buttons that I’ve saved, and I’m interested in wire wrapping them. I haven’t seen many pictures of wire wrapped button jewelry, do you have any suggestions?
-Maureen in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Answer:
Hello Maureen, we have just the thing! We have a new free site pattern from Albina Manning that uses buttons to create a wire wrapped button ring. You can use 2- or 4-hole buttons with this design, and it’s very easy to incorporate buttons into wire wrapped earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. We hope this is a good spark for your imagination!

Thanks for the great idea! My mother has collected buttons since she was a child (my grandmother was a seamstress)so we have jars full of pretty buttons going back to the 1920’s. Tomorrow Mom will be 81 years old and I’m going to make her a ring with one of her pretty buttons. Two problems solved at once-what to do with the buttons and what to give Mom that will give her a great deal of pleasure.
Thanks again

Hi Vickie!
I am soo envious of your family button collection…I have made hundreds of rings from all sorts of materials including buttons…my favorites are vintage buttons especially from the German Schwanda Button Company and the moonglow finish they do.
Good luck,
Cathy :)))

What a great idea to recycle buttons in a pretty fashion. I love those rings… Can’t wait to get to the buttons I have kept for so many years in hope I could find good use for them.
Thank you!

I found a really cool carved wooden button which was imported from China or???. It is about 1 3/8″ in diameter, and has the tab on the back that you sew through. I wrapped it just as I would a cabochon with the bail, etc.. and it is a conversation piece when clients are looking at my work at shows. Have fun with your buttons!!! You are only limited by your imagination!
