Daily Wire Tip Oct. 31: Will a Small Dremel Twist Wire?

Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip

Happy Halloween!
Question:
Can I use a small dremel to twist the wire?
Answer:
About all of my experiments in using a dremel to twist wire have ended sadly. I even tried using a dremel with multiple speeds and still it is too fast and broke the wire. The one rare success was twisting two 16g round wires together. For more information about Wire Twisters, CLICK HERE!

I have twisted several different sizes of wire with a Dremel, though using two pieces of wire, not one piece of flat wire, I have had no problems what so ever. I double my wire put the 2 ends into the Dremel I hook the loop to a secure object i.e. a nail clamped into a vice, and away I go I have done this with 18,20,22 & 24 gauge wire.

Thank you for the advice,I will not try my dremel. I have twisted wire with a regular drill that has the different speeds on them and it works quite well.

I use 18 guage hh square wire in some bracelets that I make. I twist my wire by placing one end in the open chuck of my electric drill. The other end is locked in a vise grip lined in leather. I hold the wire out straight, pulling on it just enough to keep it taut. I twist it very slowly and steadily until all the wire is twisted evenly. Using evenly tempered wire to begin with is very important!

Oh my goodness! A Dremel, even on low speed is a recipe for disaster! Get a small cordless drill with variable speed, and an adjustable chuck. You can pull the trigger just the amount needed for reliable twisting.

I have never used a Dremel to twist wire but I have used a cordless drill that I bought at Home Depot for $10 and it worked fine.
On the other hand I found cordless dremels(since I was using water and rouge; not a great combo when connected to electricity !:( I thought it was great for polishing rings that got tarnished everyweek when I was doing a city based farmer\’s market.
