Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip for
April 11, 2011

Question:

Hi Dale, I am interesting in learning how to bezel. Where can I get information on how to bezel and the tools and materials that I will need? What is the best torch to use for bezeling cabochons and stones. What kind of brick is required for heating and soldering? I am so excited about learning this next step in jewelry making for me. I love finding new techniques and this site is absolutely wonderful! Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Betty, the Wire-Sculpture team and I are very pleased to hear how much you enjoy all of the cool information on our site, thanks!

Our mission is to provide all sorts of information and education, as well as the supplies needed, to create traditional wire jewelry design. There are many expert websites, forums, and books devoted to all manners and methods of jewelry making, and we are dedicated specifically to this art form. As such, I cannot answer your questions about bezeling. My advice is to do an internet search using the phrase "create bezel setting". The search results are amazing! You will be able to find everything from written to video instructions that will help you in this area of jewelry making. Have fun!

    Betty:
You should be able to find a rock club in your area that actually teaches such techniques as bezeling most likely by taking a class in silversmithing. It would be a great source for you for networking, learning and making new friends.
Our goal here is to teach you techniques totally different than the hard core jeweler, where you create using just wire and hand tools and not torches, soldering, etc.
So while we don’t necessarily do it (though I have done silvermsithing and sodering in the past) we will try and steer you in the direction you can go to find the information you need.

    Betty,
I would recommend you join a Lapidary club where they teach both lapidary and silversmithing. Learning how to cut and polish stones will take your jewellery creation to another level. I did this and have now developed a ‘hybrid’ bezel setting that is a combination of wire sculpture and silversmithing. I only use hand tools and never use soldering or glue.
I commend Wire-Sculpture for their commitment to keeping to the traditional wire jewellery designs as this is such an exciting craft. In particular to Dale for her sharing of her knowledge.

I believe I have seen a couple of videos on YouTube but there is also a really good source called The Ganoksin Project. There is all types of information about metalsmithing. Just make sure when you do a search on this site, you include all the archives in the drop down option. I accidentally found this site looking for information on metal folding.
