Daily Wire Tip Dec. 24: Jump Ring Measurements
Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip for
December 24, 2010
Question:
What gauge wire and temper are jump rings generally made of in a 4mm size?
-Judy in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts
Answer:
Judy, the size of jump rings is usually either the inside diameter, or ID (measuring the inside of the ring from side to side, directly across the center); or the outside diameter, or OD (measuring the outside of the ring from side to side, directly across the center). Wire-Sculpture.com’s jump rings are all labeled by the OD (outer diameter).
A 4mm jump ring can be made with about any gauge wire you desire. Most folks use dead soft for larger wire gauges like 14, 16 and 18; half hard wire in gauges 20 down to 22 works well. Your choice of wire gauge and temper will depend on what you are making. Hope that helps!
Note: Tip of the Day is taking a break for December 25 & 26. Merry Christmas, and see you on Monday!
