Daily Wire Tip Dec. 3: Measuring a Ring with a Ring Mandrel
Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip for
December 3, 2010
Question:
When I place a ring on the ring mandrel, at what point of the ring do I measure the size? The center of the shank, the top, or the bottom?
-Lindsay in Elkhart, Indiana
Answer:
Due to the width of some rings, this can be confusing. To measure a ring on a ring stick or mandrel, use the measurement that is in the center of the shank.

What great timing! My daughter asked me to make her a size 9.5 silver ring with a bezel around large cabochon. When I got to sizing it, I would have been stumped.
Thanks for the info. Kathy

About the shank on the ring, where is it. I will be making some rings as soon as my hand gets well so would be good to know. Hope you can help me, BY THE WAY THIS IS MY FAVORITE WEB SITE!!!

I hate to differ with the best wire sculptor I’ve ever seen, but assuming that the shank is uniform in size, the size would be taken at the point where it is tight on the mandrel. That is, if you are holding the mandrel upright with the largest size at the bottom and the smallest at the top, it would be at the bottom of the shank of the ring.

Thanks Dixie! You are correct as well. I was basically talking about wire rings such as the classic cab, as often the 4 to 6 wire shank telescopes a bit while on the mandrel.

Thank you for the info. Made a number of rings and was never sure what the correct size was.
