Daily Wire Tip Sept. 23: Converting Troy Ounces to Feet of Wire
Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip for
September 23, 2010
Question:
I am having trouble with the troy ounce-to-feet conversion when buying wire of different gauges. Is there a conversion table I can follow so I can know the amount of wire I am getting when ordering online?
-Jimmy in Solomons, Maryland
Answer:
Yes! In our Jewelry Resource Center, under All About Wire, is the link for several Wire Charts. The top chart tells how many feet there are in an ounce of sterling silver wire and gold filled wire, depending on the gauge and shape. The second chart converts copper and brass from pounds to feet.

Isn’t a troy ounce slightly less than an ounce?

Kathy, unless one is purchasing and working in solid gold or platinum wire, it really doesn’t make that much of a difference. Thanks for your observation.

Wow. What timing. I’m hoping to buy some rose gold to sculpt a special cab for a friend and was having difficulty figuring whether to spring for the one oz I found on one site (you’re OUT, darn it) and the varying other per foot prices.
Thanks!
When will Wiresculpture have rose gold in? Maybe I can wait a bit?

Casey I am not sure when the rose gold will be in stock, but I will ask for you! (As we have some of the best prices for precious wire, it is difficult for the mills to keep up with us!)
