How to Make a Wire Hook Clasp

Today we feature a simple pattern by Kate Richbourg in which she show us how to make this Wire Hook Clasp.

Kate Says:

This wire hook comes in handy in all sorts of jewelry situations. A perfect finish to handmade chain or wire wrap it onto the end of a leather necklace. Choose 18 to12-gauge wire for this hook, depending on how heavy you want it to be. Make a matching two-loop eye as in the last photo to complete the set.

Materials:

• 18 to 12 gauge wire. I usually work off the end of the spool when I make these. If you cut a piece of wire, use about 3″.

Tools:

• Round nose pliers
• Chain nose pliers
• Flush side cutters
• Medium Wrap and Tap pliers or a 10mm mandrel
• Bench Block
• Chasing Hammer
• Permanent Marker
  Ruler

1. Working from the end of your wire, use a round nose pliers to make a loop at the end of the wire.

2. Measure 3/8″ from the loop and mark with permanent marker.

3. Using the medium wrap and tap pliers, grip the wire on the mark with the largest barrel and loop the wire up and over the pliers, forming a hook.

4. Use the permanent marker to make a mark on the wire even with the center of the loop.

5. Use a flush cutter to cut the remaining wire away at the mark you just made. Grip the tip of the hook and bend it at a slight angle.

6. Place the hook on a bench block and tap lightly using a chasing hammer to flatten the hook slightly. This step also work hardens the hook to make it stronger for wear. File the tip of the hook smooth.

7. The hook may be opened using chain nose pliers and attached to a chain or slide it onto a leather cord and secure the loop with a wire wrap coil made from 24G wire.

   Thanks for a great explanation on how to make a wire hook clasp. I’ve done one before but can never remember exactly how to make another. Thanks a lot.

   I learned to use this technique from Kate and it comes out perfect every time, and I can use different size wire to make different sizes.
