Daily Wire Tip March 7: What is Quilter`s Tape?
Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip
March 07, 2010
Question:
What is quilter`s tape?
Answer:
Quilter’s tape is an adhesive tape that was made for the seamstress, as a way to hold quilting projects together while stitching. This special adhesive is designed so it can be removed and reused, without leaning a sticky residue behind. Most often quilter’s tape is found in fabric supply stores in rolls that are a ¼ inch wide. In wire jewelry making, quilter’s tape is most often used as a temporary binding to hold wire bundles together. When used in small segments, where one end is folded under as a tab to grasp, it can be reused many times before it looses its sticking ability, and the ¼ inch width is about perfect for most projects. If a slight residue is left after removing the tape, it can easily be removed by using a piece of t-shirt or a cotton swab that has been dampened with denatured alcohol.

Quilter’s tape still has too much residue for me, so I went in search of the “lightest” masking tape I could find.
The tape that I like is the (3M) “Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape for Delicate Surfaces”. Since it’s too wide, I simply use a sharp utility knife to score the face of the tape(still on the roll)into narrow strips and remove the small amounts I need.

Thanks Jeff, I also use a lot of painter’s tape, especially on larger wire bundles.

Isn’t it funny how we each see using something as different? I don’t like the blue painter’s tape at all, despite having used in when taking classes with Dale. I find the quilters tape more to my liking and don’t have a problem with a tacky residue. Of course I get comments at the checkout when I walk up with 4 to 5 packs of the quilters tape and the cashier wants to know what I am quilting. It is so funny when I tell her that I use if for wire wrapping instead.
