Wire Jewelry Inspiration September 11: Remembering the Fallen

Wire Jewelry Inspiration for September 11, 2013
Remembering the Fallen.
One fateful day in September our lives changed in an instant. I still remember the phone call I received from my husband. He asked if I was watching the TV? I told him no, as I didn’t normally watch TV in the morning… He said ” Go turn it on, you won’t believe what just happened..” and there was something in his voice, something frantic and scared. It was in those brief moments, as a nation, we were changed forever. I personally will never forget how I felt that day.
Today we commemorate one of the most dramatic attacks on our nation that most of us have seen or will ever see in our lifetime.
Today, in addition to remembering the events and feelings I had on 9/ 11, will be another emotional day for me. Today my son will be sworn in as a NAVY sailor. Today he takes the oath to proudly serve his country with Honor, Courage and Commitment. In my personal history book, I will always remember the feelings I experience today. In the coming days and weeks I will think of him, wonder about his future and be concerned for his safety, much like how we as a nation felt in 2001. The day our very existence was challenged.
As I have pondered this important day, my thoughts wandered to how we, as creative artists, express our emotions. Some of us paint, some of us dance, some sing. For those of us who create art it represents so many things – it express our emotions and it shows how we feel and what we think. Today I decided to share with you a few jewelry artists and how they express their feelings about 9/11 .
I dedicate this post to those fallen heroes, to those who lost their lives on 9/11, and to all of our service men and women who continue to fight for our daily freedoms!
Enjoy!
Memorial Patterns:
Commemorative jewelry by Maryanne Murphy.
A note by Maryann as quoted on Jewelry Making Journal:
“This isn’t so much about the piece of jewelry, but why it was created. We are in the hot August dog days of summer. School has started here in Georgia and Labor day is just around the corner. There’s something else that’s just over the hill too. Something that 10 years ago changed my families lives and thousands of others in ways we never would have expected. September 11, 2001.
I’ve created 4 pieces of special jewelry in memory of all the lives that were lost and effected by the tragedy of that day. A quiet memory of lives lost and changed, of hero’s not expecting to be made, and a Nation unified in the presence of unspeakable horror
These are my personal expression of healing. Something to hold onto, something to remember, because we should never forget, and I’m honored and proud to be an American. These are just very simple necklaces embodying deep, profound personal meaning.
Glass heart beads in red, white and blue are individually hand-wired and attached to four different symbols. A five point star, a single angel wing, a double angel wing and an open heart. The necklaces are 19 long and closes with a lobster claw clasp.” – Maryanne Murphy

Personalized 9/11 memorial Bracelets – Designs by Debi
A note by Debi from her personal website regarding her jewelry:
“As a Nation, the horror of 9/11 will be forever etched in our minds. On that tragic day, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives and their families and friends lost their loved ones forever.
If you lost a loved one in the September 11th attacks or just want to be sure we never forget those lost that day and the families they left behind, a Remember 9/11 Memorial Bracelet is the perfect way to do so. It’s a heartfelt tribute to those who died that day.
Design #1 is made with sterling silver flag blocks, beads and heart toggle clasp; Swarovski® crystals in red, crystal and blue; fiber-optic flag beads and a sterling silver ‘Remember’ Twin Towers charm.
Design #2, a personalized version, is also made with sterling silver beads and heart toggle clasp; Swarovski® crystals in red, crystal and blue and a sterling silver ‘Remember’ Twin Towers charm, but instead of flag beads, it has your loved ones name spelled out in sterling silver letter blocks. You can also add an ‘In Memory’ Dangle, Branch of Service Charm and/or Awareness Ribbon Charm to your bracelet.”

Pentagon benches: Remember 9/11.
Seven years after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, 184 military personnel stand ready to remove the covers on a series of benches in front of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Each structure is inscribed with the name of one of the victims who died at the government building that day—59 aboard American Airlines Flight 77 which crashed into the Pentagon, and 125 while at work at their desks. The monument, the first to commemorate the victims of 9/11, has been designed by Kaseman Beckman Amsterdam Studio.
Wrapping it up:
I hope that you have been touched by a few of the ideas today, as I have been in researching them. I would hope that you will take a few moments and remember those fallen heroes who gave much for our nation and our freedom.
I think that as I go forward in my new found responsibilities as a NAVY mom, I will feel a deeper pride for my country and for the sacrifice that my son will now make for me.
Hopefully I will never have to wear a “fallen hero” bracelet for him, but will stand proud and wear my “Always Honored – Never Forgotten” Pin as I watch the American flag wave in the wind and know that he, and so many others, give of themselves every day for my freedoms.

Beautiful tribute in remembrance of the heroes and the fallen. I, too, recall exactly where I was and how those around me were reaching out to each other for comfort and support as we watched the live coverage. It didn’t matter who we were or whether we knew the person closest to us; we were united as Americans in shock and grief.
As the years have passed and those of age on Dec 7, 1941, pass on, Pearl Harbor Day becomes an ever distant memory. Some day, too, 09/11/2001, will fade away but, until then, let us all remember with love those who fell and those who served and stand strong in the support of our country.

What an amazing tribute post. It takes so little to bring back all the emotion of that day, and they’re so raw that it’s hard to believe it was 12 years ago! I’m honored to have my Remember 9/11 Memorial Bracelets™ featured in your article. Thank you for including me in your heartfelt tribute to the heroes made that day and in the war on terror that followed. Thank you also to your son and your family; for it’s not only he who serves in the Navy, but all of you who serve and sacrifice as a military family. Thank you to all of our Soldiers, Veterans and Military Families and a loving hug from my heart to all who lost loved ones on 9/11.

A touching tribute. It’s nice to actually follow a blog sometimes that isn’t always trying to shove a sale down my throat.

Reading your moving tribute touched me on many levels. 9/11 was a defining moment in our nation’s history, and personally. I don’t think there is a person alive who doesn’t remember what he or she was doing that day. As both a Navy veteran and mother of a Marine, I can especially identify with you as a Navy mom…my son joined the Marine Corps, and graduated on 9/11/2009. He is still serving and his father and I are very proud of him. This post truly touched me; thank-you for sharing. Blessings to you, your family, and especially your son as he begins his journey to become a United States Navy sailor. Fair winds and following seas to him.

I truly appreciated the tribute, but I was a little perturbed by the Christian pieces. There were people of many beliefs –Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, and non-believers, to name a few, who died in the Towers. To imply that Christianity had anything to do with it is rather offensive to those of us who are not Christian. I’m sure I will get many objections to this posting, which is a good thing if it means I have called some attention to the issue of the variety of beliefs that make this country unique.

Sherri, I appreciate your comments. There were, I am sure, many of different beliefs who died in the Towers. We should never forget the diversity that makes up our country, for it is what makes us unique. I simply tried to feature a few pieces that were readily available, religious and non-religious. I would love to see more. Please feel free to share if you know of others. Thank you!

Sherrie, I feel that Narlene provided several ways of creating jewelry to commemorate the terrible day of 9/11. There are pictures of 4 different necklaces and two bracelets that do not in any way imply Christianity. For those people who want a Christian symbol there were 3 different objects offered from vendors. Certainly anyone can create their own jewelry using some of these ideas that are not religious. I can think of other symbols that could be used in a bracelet or necklace such as a dove for peace, a bead with peace written on it, wings, hearts, stars, and even a bead with God printed on it which could be interpreted as being universal.
Thank you Narlene for writing such a beautiful tribute to those who lost their lives.
